How Set Up Controller In MAME Retropie Raspberry pi 1 2 3 or zero

I’m playing this on a RetroPie 3B+ arcade 1up cabinet I made and was wondering if there is a way to map an exit MAME button. For all my other emulators pressing the coin and start button allows me to exit into the main menu but idk how to do it for MAME

how do you clear/unbind a binding?

Do you have to do this for each game or does it save for all you load on the emulator?

What do you do if tab stopped working for it ? It worked once to initially set it up now I need to set up player two and no matter what mame game it is I hit tab and nothing happens .

Just wanted to join this party a little late and say that MAME is absolutely the worst emulator out there when it comes to configuring a damned controller. FBA all day long. Very few games don't work with FBA.

How do I Accessing MAME settings when tab key is not working on my on my rii mini keyboard ???
It work on my old keyboard I gave away , but only one of the Tab keys … This keyboard doesn't . Any idea of commands that may fix this ???

Thanks for this tutorial, however I’m having some bother, every time I switch on my retropie it asks me to configure the controller, then when I go in to play a game, and when I exit the game, it freezes and I can’t select anything with joypad or keyboard, help!

For some reason when I close the game and reopen it the controllers are in the default set again,what did I do wrong?

On all ikari Warriors ROMs I need to configure how to shoot in different directions like I walk like I want to shoot less while I'm walking right or vice a versa I need that configuration for Robotron and in other games such like those please

No matter what controller I plug in, I can't map anything. Press enter then try and use a controller or joystick and no input shows up.

Nobody has ever figured out how to clear a single control entry – I now have every key mapped to coin 1 and there is a vortex appearing in the room. They just say delete your default.cfg – start again. This UI is so terrible.

How to play 2 joysticks

For exit mame press tab and map the user interface imput in : cancel UI = esc or start+select

NEED HELP. While in input general i acidently walked way and my dog walked on my key board changing mu UI Up to NonONE and my UI Down to UP DOWN UP ENTER. Now i have no movement and cannot change any of my settings. Is there a way to override it. Please help. I have no controls what so ever now.

Always a good idea to backup your image file first before you even put it in the pi.
if you assign a control incorrectly in mame ie.P1 to down or something. press enter to select it again then press escape to clear it👍

MAME sucks balls in Retropie. Impossible to config controllers. Doesn't see any USB controllers. POS.

How do I do this for FBA?

I dumped all "Arcade" games in the Arcade folder. All my ROMs use mame 2003 or FBA emulators… I seem to have no problem using Select+Start to exit the game. I may change it though because my buttons aren't labeled and confused friends always just press random combinations of buttons to get things to work and end up exiting the game a lot lol

I Know this is an older video but could you answer something for me? I have a raspi 3b+ with retropie4.4 running mame. For some reason I cannot map a joypad key to exit the game and return to the Mame roms screen. Could you help a bit? Thank you in advance

how do you select a different character? I can only select the first character…..in TMNT its Leo, in simpsons it Marge.

I can configure the start , select (coin) , a,b,c,d button , but for some reasons it doesn't see the up down left right of my control pad , what do you think could be the problem ?
